Your body’s pH level has a significant effect on your overall health. A pH balanced environment allows normal body function necessary for the body to resist illnesses. A 2012 review published in the Journal of Environmental Health found that balancing your body’s pH by following an alkaline diet can be helpful in reducing the risk factors of several illnesses.

Maintaining a proper pH balance means maintaining a body which is neither too acidic, nor too alkaline. The recommended ratio of alkaline and acidic foods to be consumed for a proper pH balance is 60:40. If you have acidosis which is a condition in which your body is too acidic, the ratio to be followed is 80:20.

pH refers for the potential of hydrogen and is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of your body’s fluids and tissues. The pH scale is from 0 to 14, with numbers below 7 acidic and numbers above 7 alkaline. PH of around 7 is considered neutral and the optimal pH level for the healthy functioning of our body is between 7.35 and 7.45. The pH levels tend to vary throughout the body. Stomach is the most acidic region. It also varies depending on the time of the day and the nature of the last food you ate.

You can shift your body’s pH to a healthy level by following careful dietary pattern that include eating plenty of alkaline forming foods. It can be easily done by adding more alkaline foods to your daily diet. The end goal is to have a body which is more alkaline than acidic.

While following an alkaline diet, you can notice several positive changes that include

Dried figs and raisins are especially good to increase your body's alkalinity Though lemons are highly acidic in nature, it is acid forming when digested and assimilated by the body, due to its high potassium content. So they are also good for increasing the alkalinity of the blood and tissues.

If you have acidosis, then You should completely avoid the intake of highly acidic foods such as soda, beer and coffee as their pH value is far below the healthy level. Soda has a pH of 2, beer 2.5 and coffee 4.0
