Eating Grapes Can Relieve Symptoms of Arthritis like Joint Pain and Stiffness

Grapes are loaded with antioxidants and are high in vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin K. It also contains resveratrol, Quercetin and bioflavonoids. The pain reducing properties of grapes are mainly due to the presence of quercetin, vitamin C, bioflavonoids and polyphenols (antioxidant) that are contained in it. In the study, evidence of increased cartilage metabolism was observed in people consuming a grape enriched diet. “Our findings provide promising data that links grape consumption to two very important outcomes for those living with knee osteoarthritis, which are, reduced pain and improvements in joint flexibility”. said Thani Juma from Texas University, United States.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a type of illness that affects joints due to the breakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bone. Joint pain and stiffness are the most common symptoms of osteoarthritis. It mainly affects older people because of the chronic degeneration of the cartilage and synovial membrane of the joints.The initial symptoms appear only following exercise, but over time it becomes constant.

 

 

Other symptoms may include joint swelling and decreased range of motion. When the back is affected by osteoarthritis, weakness or numbness of the arms and legs occur. Joints near the ends of the fingers, at the base of the thumb, neck, lower back, knee, and hips are the most commonly involved joints. Often, joints on one side of the body are more affected by it than the other side.

During the study, scientists assigned 70 men and women with knee osteoarthritis (OA) to either consume grapes in the form of whole grapes, frozen, dried powder or a placebo powder.

The research showed that both men and women consuming a grape enriched diet had a significant decrease in self reported pain related to activity and an overall decrease in osteoarthritis symptoms. This beneficial effect was more profound in females. Osteoarthritis is more likely to occur over 45 years of age, and women are more likely to have it than men.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease characterised by chronic inflammation of the synovial joint. It leads to joint malformations, and disability.
