During the study, scientists assigned 70 men and women with knee osteoarthritis (OA) to either consume grapes in the form of whole grapes, frozen, dried powder or a placebo powder.

The research showed that both men and women consuming a grape enriched diet had a significant decrease in self reported pain related to activity and an overall decrease in osteoarthritis symptoms. This beneficial effect was more profound in females. Osteoarthritis is more likely to occur over 45 years of age, and women are more likely to have it than men.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease characterised by chronic inflammation of the synovial joint. It leads to joint malformations, and disability.
